Rico Tan

Director of Technology

Originally from Jakarta, Rico Tan is the Director of Technology, a part of the leadership team at Children’s Day School, in San Francisco, California. In this role, his team is responsible for the design and support of all technology infrastructure and programs for the school to include teaching and learning, professional development, skills development, and knowledge management.  His team is also responsible for the architecture of all learning technologies, strategic planning for innovation, media, and content curation. Prior to his current role, Rico spent two decades working in technology for multimillion-dollar brands such as 3Com Corp and a global 100 law firm leading their world-wide video conferencing technology.

Rico is a Google Certified Educator, Certified Casper Administrator, traveler, drone enthusiast, an accomplished photographer and video producer, and long-time San Francisco Bay Area resident. Further, he’s active in the Silicon Valley startup community, especially within education industries.

This extended workshop will help leadership at the ministerial and district level understand the full breadth and scope of Educational Technology. We will discuss pressing needs for modern education and methods for leveraging technology across an entire district, region, or country. We will draw upon resources from successful programs in Asia, Europe, and North America to help attendees plan strategies for addressing organizational needs, plan strategically, and communicate the imperative of Educational Technology towards the economic growth of the country.

STEM/STEAM education, the Maker Movement, and the focus on 21st Century Skills have made innovation labs a must for every school worldwide. These labs, though hugely valuable for student learning, are often costly because they require materials and equipment. However, an innovation lab can be put together and run on any budget. In this session, we will explore the various tools and methods needed to build an innovation lab regardless of the finance and capabilities of the school.
