Higher Education Innovations Must be Useful for Economic Interests
JAKARTA, NNC - Director General of Innovation Reinforcement at Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti) Wihatmoko Waskitoaji assessed universities that create innovation should be useful for economic interests. In addition, innovation should also benefit the social and cultural conditions of Indonesian society.
Wihatmoko also invites universities to distinguish between innovation and invention that are often misunderstood by universities. Innovation itself according to Wihatmoko has a wedge between technology, business and marketing.
"It also requires synergy among universities, industry and government. Companies will change, universities change and government too, so there is a business strategy that needs to be taken, through continuous research," said Wihatmoko at Arifin Panigoro Auditorium of Universitas Al Azhar Indonesia (UAI), Monday (12/4/2017).
This statement was submitted by Wihatmoko during the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) of the Indonesian Rector Forum (FRI) with theme of Reinforcement of Research Downstream, Development and Innovation in Facing Disruption Era: Between Policy and Implementation. The FGD was held in collaboration between Universitas Al Azhar Indonesia (UAI), Universitas Muhammadiyah Prof Dr Hamka (UHAMKA) and Universitas Bina Nusantara (Binus).
"Higher education should shift to higher education professionals doing excellent research and producing innovative products. To bring the results of research to become a commodity utilized by consumers, long stage is needed, one of them is government support," said Wihatmoko.
Furthermore, Secretary of Director General of Research and Development Strengthening at Kemenristekdikti Prakoso said there are many strategies that can be done in improving competitiveness with developed countries. One of the efforts that can be done is to increase the productivity of research and innovation.
"Learning, Human Resources (HR), novelty as one of the indicators of work in Kemenristekdikti, this resulted in skilled human resources, having characters and being competitive from national to international. Also demanded to have innovation and bureaucratic reform," said Prakoso.
One of the government supports in this case said Prakoso is the allocation of funds amounted to IDR23.4 trillion for 2017. It is a material support, in addition to the availability of funds from other funding sources.
Nevertheless, the downstream of research results is very important to ensure the preparedness through the level of readiness of research results, so that it needs increased cooperation also with the industry.
