Education Ministry Clarifies Statement on Religious Education Removal Plan
JAKARTA, NETRALNEWS.COM - Ministry of Culture and Education clarifies the news about the plan for the abolition of religious education in line with the implementation of 8-hour a day 5-day a week school policy.
Head of Communications and Public Service Bureau Ari Santoso explained the title of the news is not appropriate. There is a context missing from Education Minister's statement after the meeting with House Commission X this afternoon. The effort to eliminate religious education is not set on the school reform agenda in accordance with the direction of the Minister of Education and Culture Muhadjir Effendy.
According to Ari, the context of Education Minister Muhadjir Effendy's statement to journalists about religious education refers to the Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture Number 23 of 2017. The Minister Regulation mandates the school to cooperate with educational institutions that organize character education in accordance with the religious main character values.
"Instead religious education which is considered less in religious studies lessons will be strengthened through extracurricular activities," Ari said in a press release on Tuesday (6/13/2017)
Ari said that Education Minister pointed out the application of strengthening character education which has been done in several regencies, among others, Siak Regency.
The regency imposed the regular school pattern until 12 am then continues with religious learning with the ustadz (Islamic teachers). Students in Siak get lunch with funds taken from Regional Budget.
Ari said that Education Minister's statement is in accordance with Article 5 Paragraph (6) and Paragraph (7) Education Minister Regulation on School Day that encourages the strengthening of religious character through extracurricular activities.
